entering the business world

Just last month, creator of Magic Suction Mugthe mug that won’t fall, Kacper Serafin, sat down with the founder of Conscious after 40 (Ja Świadoma po 40stce), Barbara Szela, a popular Polish life and networking coach on Facebook, to tackle the question on every entrepreneur’s mind: “How can I find a product?” and most importantly, “How can I start a business?”.

Barbara Szela opened the discussion by asking Kacper Serafin how his journey of being a business owner in the U.K. started. “How I ended up in England, is a really funny story actually,” Serafin laughed. “Everyone in Poland knows the drink Tymbark (a popular Polish juice brand), and I ended up pulling a cap with the message that told me to go,” he revealed. At that time, Serafin just started work as a simple salesman, who recently moved to a new town and wanted to study marketing. To his dismay, marketing wasn’t a popular study route amongst his peers in any nearby university, so he was transferred into an economic degree program. Before his marketing adventures, Serafin previously studied travel and tourism as well as management of smaller companies. None the less, nothing really fit. “The capsule said, Nothing is forced (Nic na siłę)” he shared. From there, Serafin had his sights on England, where he had some cousins. He dropped his studies all together and started to work as much as possible to save up for his new life in the U.K.

With a one way-ticket in one hand, a single carry-on in the other, and only £260 in his pocket, a new chapter was opened. “I thought, in the will be easier to start a business – easier to make money, save up, and the pound was really strong.” he explained. Serafin’s first jobat a sport’s shopwas shelving inventory in their warehouse. Serafin described the job as something he liked mentioning that “I got to see what happened behind the works. I was observing a system I wanted to learn about.” He also added that, “I think it’s also important to say, that every job, no matter how little, like washing dishes or giving out flyers, we should give our 100% so we can get the maximum experience from it.”

Barbara Szela later voiced her opinions on Serafin’s work as “an individual who became a visionary. “I always make plans,” Serafin responded. “I have a million plans in my head at the moment,” he later added.  He also mentioned that “with every plan though, you have to know the steps and go one at a time” noting that the process of getting from point A to B isn’t generally easy, but necessary to experience to get somewhere.

“So, when did it really all begin?” Szela asked. “On one of my Saturday’s working overtime, I overheard one of my colleagues taking about buying eBay pallets of returned goods in bulk,” he explained. “The topic caught my eye and I immediately started researching when I got home” he continued.  “I wasn’t too sure about it though, because I had no place to keep it, no knowledge of being a wholesaler, but I knew eBay was a platform with opportunity.” From there, Serafin knew he needed to invest in not only equipment but his education about the trade. “Education is something no one can take away from you,” he stated. “Doesn’t matter if its knowledge about a language, how to do nails, perming hair, it’s yours.” Serafin went on to explain what knowledge can do when it comes to promoting your passion so that others too would join in and understand. “I’m a salesman. I love selling anything to anyone,” he announcedSerafin recounted that he began selling shoes on eBay which wasn’t a big money maker but rather a learning experience to get to his big breakthrough.

With that, Szela questioned Serafin if “money is really everywhere?” Nodding, Serafin added that it is also important to “surround yourself with people who will lift you up”. That being said, Serafin also made effort to emphasize “investing in people” too and not just gadgets that will help you expand. “You have to find a potential in society,” Serafin stated. “I found that potential when I spilled coffee all over my desk,” he added.  Researching the market, he found nothing to solve this simple problem everyone had. From there Serafin set out to draft extensively while plugging along in his mental calculator and eventually traveling to China to meet manufacturers to make his idea a reality

Kacper Serafin’s big breakthrough finally hit. After ordering some trial cups and posting them on eBay, Serafin found himself restocking constantly to his surprise. “The greatest myth people believe in when starting a business is that you’ll immediately get profits,” he noted. “in fact, you constantly have to re-invest your sales in your company until you can make any real profits, which is what I did” he revealed.

Szela added to this myth busting discussion by adding that “Many of us, especially here in Poland, think you have to have a lot of money to invest in, in order to start a business,” adding, “but in your case that isn’t true.” Coming to the U.K. with very little, Serafin’s life story had disproved another common myth in the business world. Serafin emphasized that yet again, investing in education goes farther than money can. “I love to readand I even encourage my employees to read so that as a whole we get stronger, better and faster.”

Serafin’s story doesn’t stop there though. Having to convert his tiny flat into a warehouse already, Serafin knew he needed to catch something to grow more. “If it wasn’t for my friend, I would have totally overlooked this opportunity, this chance,” he disclosed. That opportunity was a start-up pitch competition held by Deliveroo, a food delivery service he recently started. Preparing quickly, Serafin took a shot at it and won a hefty £20,000 which has helped his sprouting business bloom.

Since the competition Kacper Serafin has established a team of hardworking individuals to form the now known Magic Suction Mug. Equipped with a unique website, various product models, international shipping, and even an affiliate program, Kacper Serafin’s story is a real life demonstration of how nothing can turn into something. “When you see it, you got to do it,” Serafin concluded. “There is no better time than now.”
